The Subjunctive Tense
The Subjunctive (le subjonctif)
The tenses you have come across so far (present, future, imperfect etc) are in what is called the indicative mood.
Very broadly speaking the subjunctive mood is used to talk about something that is one remove from reality, to express an attitude towards an event rather than just describe the event itself.
Eg. Il est malade INDICATIVE (l'indicatif)
Je doute qu’il soit malade SUBJUNCTIVE (le subjonctif)
Probably the best way to cope with the subjunctive is to learn when it is most commonly used.
One example of when to use the subjunctive is after verbs of liking, wishing and preferring (when you wish someone to do something or you prefer someone to do something)
Eg Je veux qu’il parte I want him to leave
How to form the subjunctive
Il_________e Ils__________ent
Eg infinitive ils form present tense subjunctive stem je form of subjunctive
Finir ils finissent finiss je finisse
Prendre ils prennent prenn je prenne
Exercise
Give the je form of the present subjunctive of the following verbs
Use the subjunctive after a verb expressing a wish or a preference/expectation. The subjunctive is used where there is a change of subject. If the subject remains the same an infinitive can be used.
Eg. Je veux consulter un spécialiste
Je veux qu’il consulte un spécialiste
Examples of these verbs: aimer que, aimer mieux que, désirer que, préférer que, attendre que, s’attendre que, souhaiter que, vouloir que
Translate the following: 1.My parents want me to stay in Ireland 2. I want him to take the plane. 3. I want her to tell the truth 4. I want the government to help the poor. 5. My parents don’t like me going out during the week. 6. I would like the headmaster to abolish our uniform. 7. I want him to buy the Porsche. 8 I would like Marcus to win XFactor. 9. Irregular forms
Before listing the French verbs with irregular subjunctive forms, it is worth noting that even these irregular subjunctive forms still follow certain patterns of other French verbs:
- The nous and vous forms vary only in whether they have the -ons or -ez ending;
- The other forms (je, tu etc) always sound identical to one another;
- The tu form always ends in -s in the spelling, and the ils form always ends in -ent (just as for any verb and any tense in the language).

THE PAST HISTORIC ( PASSÉ SIMPLE)
This tense is used instead of the passé composé in formal writing. You do not need to write in this tense in the Leaving Cert. You may need to recognise it in your comprehensions.
For all regular -er, -ir, and -re verbs, the passé simple is formed by dropping the infinitive ending, the final two letters of the infinitive, and replacing them with the the following endings. This tense is used instead of the passé composé in formal writing. You do not need to write in this tense in the Leaving Cert. You may need to recognise it in your comprehensions.
The past historic is not used in speech or in your writing . You only need to be able to recognise what it means in comprehensions.
